Alameda County Technology Reuse Program

Alameda County, CA
Program Year: 2016

Abstract:
Alameda County Tech Reuse Program – Securing County data while implementing an environmentally responsible technology recycling program. The Alameda County Information Technology Department (ITD) launched the Technology Reuse Program in November 2014. The Tech Reuse Program focuses on data loss prevention and saving tax payer dollars by maximizing county resources. The objectives were:  • Ensure data loss prevention and data privacy  • Reduce e-waste  • Save tax payer funds by maximizing County technology investments  • Align with the County’s Go Green Initiatives Alameda County has 9,600 employees, most with either a desktop, laptop, tablet, smart phone, etc. The program allows a streamlined process for the County IT Department to centrally collect, wipe and repurpose equipment that might have a second life. If the equipment has truly reached end of life, then it is recycled in an eco-friendly manner. A specially designed website provides County Departmental IT staff access to the current inventory of various desktops, laptops and mobile device, that have been wiped of all data and are available at no cost. The program has resulted in providing repurposed technology to Departments, saving them from having to buy new equipment.
